I’m just going to leave this here.

The winning shootout goal was one of the absolute slickest things I have seen in a long time of watching the sport.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 10:43 |

We won something? Wow.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 10:44 |

Really stupid that a gold medal game doesn’t stay sudden death ot though.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 10:45 |

That was simply an incredible game of hockey, probably better than any men’s game I’ve watched in this tournament. As Chelsea Janes wrote in the WaPo this morning,
If these teams played a seven-game series, a safe bet would be a shootout in the seventh. If they played 101 times, they would need overtime in the 101st.

I was watching this earlier. That was a pretty sick move. That poor goalkeeper had no chance.

Totally agree. The 3 OT games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is freaking cool.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 10:45 |

Sudden death OT playoff hockey is the most exciting sports moment there is. Plus, it’s, you know, actual hockey and not a skills contest.

Her former UND coach, Peter Elander, taught her that shot. It’s called the “Oops..I did it again.” No lie.

I’ll admit, I teared up. What an amazing game. I’m so proud of those ladies right now.

Damn right we did.

Don’t forget this one (even though it was just the semifinal):
![]() 02/22/2018 at 10:52 |

I just saw that. I’m going to have to go back and watch that match. After I stream the finals of the women’s bobsled (bobsleigh?).
![]() 02/22/2018 at 10:53 |
|
That dude on the right is from Madison. I wouldn’t say curling is big here, but I have actually heard people talking about it in non-Olympic years. Which is probably more than you can say for most places.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 10:57 |

Also this: first medal for USA xc skiing since 1976. Amazing.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 10:58 |

I haven’t watched that yet either. I’ll catch it on the NBC online replay. Gotta watch the women’s bobsled, too.

The selfie they’re trying to do is hilarious. So iconic of the generation.

I had the same thought. You and I need to get together over a Scoth and complain about kids these days.

Fuck yes.
ETA: Canadian tears taste like maple syrup.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:06 |

I agree that they should play it out. But hey, rules are rules.

We’re fourth in gold medals and total medal count.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:13 |

That’s right, and it takes nothing away from the US Women’s victory- I just looooove sudden death playoff hockey. Although it’s actually more fun to watch when your team is *not* playing it (very stressful if they are).
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:14 |
|
TBH we probably should’ve let Canada win it. It’s not nice to continually beat on our little brother like this.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:14 |

Gorgeous goal. Too bad the hockey game wasn’t decided by playing hockey though.

![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:16 |

I’m not sure about that. The US team has been hot... I think they’d have taken it eventually anyway. I wouldn’t count anything out between these two but that’s my opinion.
That said, screw the shootout. Hard. With a cactus.

Same with soccer...shoot outs are a terrible way to end a game. It’s like a football game ending with kickers trading of kicking field goals until someone misses. I think hockey and soccer could have an awesome overtime ending that could also end games quickly. Say every 3-5 minutes one player from each team has to come off the ice/field until someone scores.

*Breaking: USA takes Gold in Olympic Womens Shootout Competition*
Yeah, wake me up when they start playing hockey again. Not taking anything away from the US. Great game well played. Probably would have won anyway. LET THEM PLAY dammit.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:21 |
|
Let nothing. Play hockey. The best games are hard-fought, and DON’T INVOLVE A SHOOTOUT.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:21 |
|
I’d be willing to bet that if you asked both the American and Canadian women, it would be nearly unanimous in wanting to play on.
But the rules are the rules, so they do what they have to do.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:25 |
|
The NHL has addressed this by going to a 3-on-3 OT period. Olympic ice is a lot bigger, though, and I think that would be too few players.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:25 |
|
To show support for foreign cultures and their traditions, Justin Trudeau will wear a Gold Medal today.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:27 |

Probably would have won anyway.
I don’t know. The US women looked strong in the first half of the OT, but looked like they were getting gassed at the end, though they did kill of the penalty. It’s almost unbelievable how evenly matched those two teams are.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:28 |
|
Didn’t know that...I think soccer should change to something similar, make OT 8v8 or something. I despise shoot outs
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:28 |
|
Yeah, I have nothing against the players. They just did what they were supposed to. Bloody shootouts though.
It’s uncanny how every team I cheer for sucks can’t do shootouts though. WJC2017? Pretty obvious. TFC in the final vs Seattle? haha, nope. Womens hockey? Leafs... usually suck in the S/O. Oddly, this year at least they’re doing great, which shows what a crapshoot it is. They have just 4 new faces. 2 on defense. One on the 4th line. It’s total chance and even when we win I hate it.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:30 |
|
At least we demo’d them in the rematch.

chicago has a curling club ive been interested in going to, for the beginner session they include pizza and beer haha
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:31 |

but it will lead to the highest american curling medal ever so theres that!
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:33 |
|
It really is. Maybe that’s why the loss itself doesn’t bother me... even the games are basically a coin flip when they play.
Anyway, congrats and screw the shootout.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:33 |

You do realize that the Canadian women have won the last 4 gold medals? The last time an Olympic team had a chance to win 5 in a row was in 1980, and the Americans spoiled that run too, beating the Russians before winning the gold against Finland (see Miracle on Ice™).

Yea...shots 19-3, we know who deserved to win without even watching the game
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:43 |

Not that shots tell the whole story, but that game was TFC start to finish. Seriously.

Anytime. In fact, I just finished the Scotch in my cabinet. I need to find a good everyday one to try next.

^ Scientific evidence Americans ruin everything :)
But yeah, they had a good run.
![]() 02/22/2018 at 11:47 |

Exactly, we should just let them keep hockey. It’s the one thing they’re better than us in :)

CA-NA-DA!
Yeah, it doesn’t have the same ring. The USA chant is hilariously obnoxious but it works very well. And seeing as the result is to get under the opponent’s skin, why the hell wouldn’t you be obnoxious?

Seems logical.

There’s a hotel here that set up a curling thing (rink? end?) on their outdoor patio. We’ve been meaning to go give it a try. It’s not 100% officially the same, but pretty close I think.

Seems like it’d be fun, we’ve been trying to find a time for my sister and her girlfriend to join. Hopefully it’ll be soon before they get rid of the thing.

Cool! I’ll see you there, along with a couple thousand of your closest friends. I’ll be one of the guys holding a trumpet. Not sure if I’ll be playing 2nd or 3rd though. Have to wait and see if the principal is taking the gig. If he doesn’t, I’ll move up.
